Is Now a Good Time to Go Back to College?

August 23, 2021

Our Canadian career college is here to support students pursuing a multitude of careers. However, some people feel apprehensive about putting money toward going to college, especially during uncertain times. To help you make an informed decision, we'll be addressing a few factors that shouldn't hold you back, from your age to the economy.

You’re Never Too Old to Go to College

It's never too late to go to college, complete a program, and pursue a career that makes you happy. Colleges across both Canada and the US are filled with people aged 30+, so you'll never feel out of place.

If you're worried more about the financial aspect rather than social discomfort, that's completely valid. However, you should try to view college as an investment into your future. You likely still have many, many working years left before retirement. By investing in a short college program, you could set yourself up to make much more from your new career.

You Don’t Need to Wait for the Economy to Improve

You shouldn't have to wait some indeterminate amount of time to pursue your goals. The state of the economy is always changing, after all. Going to college during a recession is actually preferable for many people. The reason being, you're much less likely to miss out on major job opportunities while you attend school.

Ideally, the recession will have passed by the time you've graduated from your program. By then, you'll have a certificate on your side and far more opportunities than ever before. This is especially true if you attend a career college, as you'll have access to a wider range of employment opportunities than with most university programs.

Career College vs. Traditional Universities

Now may seem like the wrong time to go to university, but there's never a bad time to go to career college. Career colleges have several unique benefits over traditional universities. It's less of a financial risk, as you'll be taught practical skills that can be immediately applied to a new job or trade. Employers tend to hire career college graduates rather quickly, even those with limited experience in their respective industries.

Career colleges also offer much shorter programs. Getting your bachelor takes, on average, about 4 to 5 years. Completing a program at a career college only takes approximately 1 to 2 years. This is ideal for people who hope to start families soon or want to pursue a career in the next few years. With all of these benefits, there's truly no downside to completing a career college program. It's quick, affordable, and will help you secure employment quickly after graduating.
