How To Get the Career Skills You Need to Merit a Raise in London, Ontario

September 22, 2021

If you happen to live in vibrant London, Ontario you might be wondering “How do I further my career skills and get a raise?”. If you think you deserve a promotion, a raise, or both but don’t know where to start, we have some useful tips on what you can do. From showing initiative to improving your skills, here are 5 ways to bring you closer to the raise you want and deserve.

1. Take initiative

One of the first things you can do to get yourself noticed and improve your career skills is to take initiative. Taking initiative can have many forms, including making a plan for your career, going above and beyond to do more than what’s expected of you, and simply increasing your confidence. Consider your role and position when taking initiative to ensure your actions match it.

2. Keep learning

Learning on the job is an important part of being a good employee. Many employers offer incentives for their employees and subsidize course and training costs. Your place of work may also offer free and optional courses so be sure to take advantage of these opportunities. Not only will this teach you new career skills but you will also be noticed for taking initiative. If your place of work doesn’t offer these programs, consider asking your supervisor – you might be surprised by the results.

3. Talk to your superiors

One of the most obvious steps is to talk to your manager or supervisor. They won’t consider you for a raise if you don’t speak up! When scheduling this meeting, come prepared. Be ready to show all the ways you’ve contributed to the company, the skills you bring to the table, and the raise you want. Simply saying you want a raise is not enough. Showing why you deserve it and how much more your pay should increase is very important.

4. Have reasonable expectations

When asking for a raise be prepared to be turned out or to negotiate the terms. The company may not be in a position to give you a raise right now, or they may want to see you accomplish certain things before they do. Be realistic that asking for a raise doesn’t guarantee getting one. Ask what steps you need to take to get where you want to be.

5. Plan for the future

Having a career plan and clear timelines will keep you accountable and increase your chances of getting a raise. Have a one-year plan and be ready to talk about what you want to accomplish and how you will do it. Even if you don’t get the raise you’re after, you will have a comprehensive plan to further your career skills and advance in your position.
